Corban Nation review at Jazzquad 10/27/16

Guitar New York musician Larry Corban with the first seconds of the sound of the album Corban Nation rapidly and powerfully seizes your attention and does not fall under the charm of its sound is difficult. Corban – an accomplished musician, has a degree in the study of jazz in Ithaca College, and another, already, as a teacher, in the Hunter College. Many and many different masters he learned the secrets of guitar art in private, will name at least such iconic names as Pat Martino, Vic Juris and David Fyuchinski. The impact of their musical philosophy and the art of guitar you can hear in some fragments of the game Corban. Larry has played and recorded with so many prominent jazz musicians, besides his guitar sounds in many Broadway musicals.

Corban Nation – Corban third album Aperturistic Trio, in which people play a very well-known in the jazz world, especially bassist Harvie S and keyboardist James Weidman. The three tracks of the album in the recording also participated saxophonist Steve Slagle, who is no stranger to cooperate with guitarists: recall his excellent work with Dave Stryker. His spectacular solos on soprano saxophone in the start In-Vision and the alto in the title Corban Nation and Slow Fizz, subtle dialogues with Corban guitar just decorate these compositions. All of them were written by Larry, and in general the author’s album, except for one cover version – not too often executed Segment Charlie Parker. By the way, it seemed to me extraordinary that in this thing, written by the great saxophonist, Corban prefer to play without the support of the saxophone.

In general, the style of the album can be defined as a cross between contemporary fusion and mainstream. For example, What it is, the best, to my taste, composition disc, bass and drums already once set play funky mood that is subsequently confirmed powerful and fast game Corban with typical guitar effects and flawless, just as energetic party keyboards. At the same time, The Shape of Time, where guitar and keyboards interact not less convincing, and I Should Care can be attributed more to the mainstream. No stranger to Larry Corban and slow, soothing melodies. Such sensual atmosphere Slow Fizz, where he plays the guitar slowly, lingering, deliberately prolonged sounds. In a similar manner and the composition is made Child’s Tune, which opens up the piano party, then bass sounds, which in this case is played by Harvie with bow, and only then comes in Corban guitar.

And his business he knows. Corban – undeniably interesting and technically musician with a varied repertoire. Corban Nation – one of those albums that is pleasant to listen for any mood. And for that, the New York guitarist can be only thanked.
